LEXINGTON, Ky. – After recording one of the most successful seasons in school history, the Kentucky women’s basketball team will undoubtedly be making its seventh overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament when the women’s selection show is announced Monday, March 15 at 7 p.m. EST on ESPN.
The Wildcats (25-7, 11-5 SEC), who will gather at head coach Matthew Mitchell’s house to watch the show, have compiled an outstanding resume this season which includes tying the most wins in program history, a school-record 11 wins in the SEC and a second-place finish in the league standings. UK also had an impressive showing in the SEC Tournament last week, earning a first-round bye before defeating Auburn and Mississippi State en route to its first SEC Tournament championship game appearance since 1982. The Cats fell to No. 4 Tennessee in the final game, 70-62.
UK, which has a current RPI of 19 according to the NCAA, has appeared in six NCAA Tournaments, the last coming in 2006. The Cats went 22-9 that season and earned the fifth seed in the Bridgeport (Conn.) Region. UK defeated Chattanooga in the first round (69-59) before narrowly falling to Michigan State in the second round (67-63). UK holds a 4-6 all-time record in the Big Dance.
UK’s highest seed was in the 1982 NCAA Tournament. The Cats received the No. 2 seed in the Midwest and went on to advance to the Elite Eight vs. eventual national champion Louisiana Tech.
