NEW ORLEANS – Behind the efforts of three freshmen, the University of Kentucky women’s golf team stands 15th with a 20-over-par 308 after Friday’s first round of the Tiger/Wave Classic held at English Turn Golf and Country Club (6,132 yards, par 72).
Freshman Ashleigh Albrecht led the squad, recording a team-low 2-over-par 74. Albrecht teed off first for the Wildcats on No. 10 and finished the back nine with an even-par 36. Staying until her final hole, Albrecht double-bogied the par four No. 9 to finish the front nine two over. Albecht currently stands in a tie for 16th.
Fellow freshman Heather Lott followed close behind Albrecht with a 4-over 76. Lott recorded a 37 on the back nine and a 39 on the front. Making her spring debut, Lott enters the second round in a tie for 34th. With a 78, freshman Betsie Johnson came in as Kentucky’s third leading scorer.
Posting an 80 in the first round, sophomore Ashlee Rose turned in Kentucky’s fourth score of the day. Senior Kristin Vincent rounded out Kentucky’s five, recording an 89 in the first round.
A 54-hole event hosted by LSU and Tulane, the Wildcats are set to play 18 holes each day. Kentucky returns to competition Saturday at 8 a.m. EST starting on the 10th hole.
At the 2009 LSU Golf Classic, Kentucky capped off a record-breaking performance with an eighth-place finish. The Cats fired an 880 (293-299-288) at the event, marking the lowest three-round total for the squad under Myra Blackwelder’s direction. The third-round 288 stands as the second-best single round in school history.
Joining Kentucky at the Tiger/Wave Classic are Arkansas, Auburn, College of Charleston, Furman, Georgia, Louisville, LSU, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, North Carolina-Wilmington, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Purdue, Tennessee, TCU, Tulane, UCF, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Wake Forest.
