KENT, Ohio – The No. 12 University of Kentucky gymnastics team posted a season-high team score en route to edging host Kent State 196.050-195.950 Friday at the MAC Center.
The Wildcats built a 98.275-98.025 advantage after winning both the uneven bars and the vault, but withstood a rally by Kent State that saw the Golden Flashes win both the floor exercise and the balance beam.
Kentucky (5-6) started the meet by winning the uneven bars with a season-high 49.150. Senior Jamie Reimann (Johnston, Iowa) and Emilie Rymer (Medina, Ohio) led the Wildcats with matching 9.850 scores to share title honors with Kent State’s Erin Rothrock. The Golden Flashes finished the event with a 48.975 team score. UK’s Storey Morris (Tyler, Texas) and Caitlyn Ciokajlo (Brooklyn, Mich.) tied for fourth place with 9.825 scores.
The Wildcats extended their lead after claiming the vault title 49.125-49.050. UK’s Hillary Ferguson (Richmond, Ky.) posted a season-high 9.875 to tie teammate Whitney Rose (Frisco, Texas) for second place. Kent State’s Christina Lenny won title honors with a 9.900. UK’s Jasmine Minion (Memphis, Tenn.) tied Kent State’s Lauren Wozniak for fourth place at 9.825.
Kent State (7-3) edged Kentucky on the floor exercise 49.125-49.100. Ferguson and Emily Green (Penfield, N.Y.) shared title honors with 9.900 scores. Kent State’s Lydia Barrett took third with a 9.875. Green’s performance marks her fourth floor title of the season.
The Golden Flashes won the balance beam 48.800-48.675. UK’s Rymer and Morris tied for second place with 9.800 scores. Kent State’s Christine Abou-Mitri took title honors with a 9.875.
Kent State’s Abou-Mitri also won the all-around with a 39.275 score. UK’s Mitchell took third in the all-around at 38.450.
“It’s good to finally break the 196 barrier,” UK head coach Mo Mitchell said. “We’re looking to continue to build on that score, but we’re headed in the right direction.”
Kentucky holds its final home meet of the regular season on Friday, March 12, when it welcomes Illinois State and George Washington at Memorial Coliseum. The tri-meet start begins at 7 p.m. EST.
