LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky track and field team wrapped up competition Saturday at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., and the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash. The Wildcats finished competition in the season’s top meets outside of the Southeastern Conference and NCAA Championships.

The team split as they traveled to compete against some of the best track and field teams in the country. The men and women’s distance squad joined the throwing corps to compete in Seattle, Wash., for the Husky Classic while the Kentucky sprinters and jumps athletes traveled to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the Tyson Invitational.

Sophomore pole vaulter Samantha Stenzel headlined the team results Friday when she not only finished in fifth place but put up the best mark in school history. Stenzel soared past her personal best when she cleared 12-04.00 on her first attempt. After failing on her first two attempts at 12-10.00, she slipped by at that height, breaking the school record of 12-06.25 set in 2008 by teammate Mary Chris Durham.

Women’s thrower Kristin Smith claimed her second weight throw victory of the year. Smith’s throw of 19.79m (64 feet, 11.25 inches) makes this her fourth NCAA provisional qualifying throw this season.

The women shot putters kept their consistent streak going as they placed three in the top-five. Senior Ashley Muffet took third place with a NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 16.69m (53 feet, 09.25 inches). Mary Angell followed right behind in fourth place with a throw of 14.76m (48 feet, 05.25 inches), while Jennifer Svoboda finished tied for fifth with a mark of 14.65m (48 feet, .75 inches).

High jumper Zan Morgan finished in third place, her highest finish of the season with a jump of 1.70m (5 feet, 7 inches).

Distance runners Cally Macumber and Katherine Peterson both placed well against their competition in the Husky Classic. Macumber placed fourth in the women’s 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:46.03. Peterson’s mile time of 4:56.09 was fast enough to earn her an eighth place finish.

For the men’s team, sophomore Steven Crouse made his debut in the long jump this season. Crouse led the UK men’s jumpers with a fifth-place finish and jump of 14.94m/49-0.25. Fellow jumper David Banks followed in sixth place with a leap of 14.88m/48-10.00 and Keenan Hall who competed in the “Invitational” triple-jump section, finished in 15th place with a 14.3m/48-8.00 leap.

Senior thrower Colin Boevers claimed fourth-place in the shot put for his throw of 17.04m (55 feet, 11 inches).

The weekend’s competition included several SEC teams benefiting the Wildcats for the upcoming SEC Championships. The SEC boasts seven men’s and six women’s teams in the USTFCCCA top-25 rankings, leading all other conferences in the country.
