The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team lost to Marshall 6-1 in its first home match of the 2010 season Wednesday at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
Kentucky (1-6) earned its lone point at No. 3 singles where senior Christine Johnston (Columbus, Ohio) defeated Marshall’s Isabell Raich 6-1, 7-6 (7-0). Johnston cruised through the first set then battled back-and-forth with Raich throughout the second set before claiming the tiebreaker.
Marshall remains undefeated on the season, improving to 7-0. The Thundering Herd took the doubles point when Michaela Kissel and Dominika Zaprazna edged UK’s duo of sophomore Caroline Lilley (Portland, Ore.) and sophomore Minnette Pienaar (Graaff-Reinet, South Africa) 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.
Marshall’s Thaddea Lock and Isabell Raich defeated UK’s tandem of freshman Elle Coldiron (Lexington, Ky.) and Nicole Scates (Lexington, Ky.) 8-1 at No. 3 before UK’s Megan Broderick (Tampa, Fla.) and Johnston won No. 2 doubles with an 8-4 victory over Marshall’s Deanna Bailey and Kara Kucin 8-4.
After claiming the doubles point, Marshall extended its advantage to 3-0 with singles wins at No. 2 and No. 1. Lilley fell in straight sets to Zaprazna 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 while Broderick dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Kissel at No. 1.
After Johnston’s win at No. 3 singles edged Kentucky closer at 3-1, Marshall’s Catherine Keller defeated Pienaar 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) to secure the match for the Thundering Herd.
Bailey defeated UK’s Scates, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and Koprcina defeated UK’s Coldiron, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.
Kentucky will compete next at Indiana on Feb. 20. The Hoosiers are ranked No. 49 in the latest national rankings.
