TOWSON, Md. – Senior setter Sarah Rumely was tabbed a third-team Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine it was announced on Monday afternoon. This is the first such honor of Rumely’s career, and she becomes the fourth Academic All-America selection in school history.

Rumely was previously honored as a first time Academic All-District selection for two consecutive seasons, but this is the first time she has earned All-America status. She is a three time member of one of the Academic All-District teams. The senior from New Palestine, Ind., becomes just the fourth Academic All-American in school history. Previously April Barnhorst (2001), Lisa Bokovoy (1988) and Jill Ackerman (1986) were honored.

UK’s senior setter holds a cumulative grade point average of 3.63 with a major in Kinesiology and she is set to graduate in the spring of 2010.

Rumely has won countless awards throughout her career. As a junior, she was tabbed UK’s seventh All-American after winning SEC Player of the Year honors. Three times she has been honored as an All-SEC Academic team member and she is also a two-time All-SEC player. On the court, she is Kentucky’s all-time career leader in assists (5,514) and aces (162). She also is among the leaders in sets played (470), hitting percentage (.288), block assists (303) and digs (976).

UK’s senior is one of just two SEC players to earn Academic All-America status. South Carolina’s Sarah Cline was a second-team member.

To be eligible for the national team, a student athlete had to have been selected to its District’s first team. Initial nomination criteria at the District level includes being a varsity starter or key reserve, maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00 and has sophomore athletic and academic standing at her current institution.

UK wraps up the regular season in Knoxville on Wednesday, Nov. 24. Match time is set for a 7 p.m. ET start.
