KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Kentucky’s sprinters shined in a loss to Tennessee Friday in Knoxville, as the UK men swept both the 50 and 100-freestyle events. On the women’s side, freshman Trina Winsor earned her first career victory in dual meet action when she topped the field in the 500-free.
Tennessee eclipsed the UK men by a 180-120 score and the women fell by a 193-103 margin.
Kentucky’s men were simply spectacular in the sprint events for the Blue and White today. To start senior Eric McGinnis led a 1-2-3 finish for Kentucky in the 50-free. The senior tapped in a time of 20.49. He was followed by seniors Alex Forbes (20.69) and Elvis Burrows (20.72) in the event.
After the break, the men came back and took the top four spots in the 100-free. Forbes took his turn in the winner’s slot when he touched first with a clip of 45.63. McGinnis finished just behind in a time of 45.92. Senior Kyle Greene then finished off the scoring with a 46.04 time. Junior Colin Faris came in fourth, but only the top three scores are taken in dual meet action. Faris notched a time of 46.29 to round out the top four finishers.
Senior Warren Grobbelaar clocked in a time of 49.03 in the 100-fly to help the Blue and White dominate in the shorter events.
Junior Tyler Reed provided the Wildcats with a good showing in the distance events as well. Reed placed first in the 200-free with a time of 1:39.51. He then took second in the 500-free with a clip of 4:39.38.
The men wrapped up the meet with a victory in the 200-free relay. McGinnis (20.37), Burrows (20.34), Forbes (20.11) and Greene (20.55) teamed up for a time of 1:21.37 to just narrowly edge Tennessee which finished in a time of 1:21.67.
On the women’s side, Winsor was the lone swimmer to win an event against the speedy Lady Vols. Winsor tapped in a time of 5:01.50 for her first-ever collegiate win.
UK also captured a win in the 200-free relay. Sophomore Kelsi Hall, junior Kayla Sergesketter, sophomore Chelsea Peterson and senior Megan Pulskamp combined for a 1:34.19 time to take the 11 points awarded to a first place winner.
Junior diver Lisa Faulkner walked away as the only individual to win two events on either squad as the Virginia native captured victories on both boards for the second consecutive meet. Faulkner tallied a 279.38 score on the one-meter. She followed that performance with a 303.45 score on the three-meter to sweep the events.
Kentucky returns to action on Nov. 6 when it travels to Virginia Tech for a meet with the Hokies at 3:00 p.m. ET. The Wildcats will then have a short turnaround when they cap off the weekend with a meet against the Cavaliers of Virginia on Nov. 7th at 10:00 a.m. ET.
