LEXINGTON, Ky. — Tom Csenge, Katie Fretts and Ashley Jackson each broke 590 in air rifle, to lead the Kentucky rifle team to a 4668-4535 win over the Memphis Tigers, on Sunday at UK’s Barker Hall.
Kentucky (2-0) was led by its All-American, Csenge, who totaled a 591 in air rifle and a match-best 584 in smallbore. Freshman Katie Fretts, shooting her second collegiate match, fired a 590 in air rifle and a 573 in smallbore. Jackson, a senior, finished with a match-high 594 in air rifle and a 580 in smallbore.
“We had a better day today,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “Our smallbore is still a little down from where it could be and our air rifle is starting to come together a little better. We will get some really solid numbers in the next few weeks if we keep working at the pace we are. The team worked very hard this weekend and even though the numbers were not that great on Friday, they learned a lot about themselves this weekend and showed that they have the potential and the skills to reach their goals. Now, it is just a matter of putting it all together on a regular basis.”
Sophomore Ethan Settlemires finished with a 582 in air rifle and a 575 in smallbore, while Jen Pason totaled a 583 in air rifle and a 579 in smallbore. Sophomore Megan English totaled a 574 in smallbore and a 582 in air rifle. Senior Leslie Angel finished with a 582 in air rifle, freshman Heather Greathouse a 587 in air rifle and junior Sarah Broeker a 580 in air rifle.
“Ashley Jackson had one of the performances of the match,” Mullins said. “Her 594 had a very long sting of 10s and she came one point away from Tom’s school record. Katie Fretts shot a 590 and had a very solid string of 10’s in the middle of her air rifle match. Heather Greathouse had a 587 air rifle, which is a personal record.
“Logan Fox had a solid two matches this weekend. He had a 577 smallbore today which is a personal record. Jen had a 579 smallbore which she had to work for, but showed herself that she has a lot more left in her for her senior season. Stacy and James both had solid performances.”
Kentucky returns to action Oct. 17, traveling to Fort Worth, Texas, to face TCU at the site of the 2009-10 NCAA Championships.
“Overall, I was very proud of the team today,” Mullins said. “They worked very hard and stayed focused throughout the entire match. We just need to stay the course and keep pushing for great performances.”
