The Kentucky women’s golf team stands in sixth place (612) after playing two rounds today at the Mary Fossum Invitational held at Forest Akers West Golf Course.

Kentucky finished the first round in fifth after posting a 304. Sophomore Ashlee Rose led the Wildcats in the opening round with a 1-under-par performance (71). She ended play in the top five in a two-way tie for third. Rose recorded a 76 in the second round and is currently tied for 12th.

Ashlee Rose got off to a solid start and continued her good play throughout the day,” head coach Myra Blackwelder said. “She continues to show improvement in her maturity and game.”

Making her collegiate debut, freshman Betsie Johnson paced Kentucky to a 308 in the second round. She posted a 2-over-par 74 after shooting a 78 in the first 18. Johnson tallied three birdies in opening-day action.

Betsie Johnson found her rhythm in the afternoon round, which helped her lead the team with an excellent 74,” Blackwelder said.

Senior Kristin Vincent and freshman Ashleigh Albrecht rounded out Kentucky’s effort. With four birdies, Vincent finished with a 157 (76, 81). Seeing her first collegiate action, Albrecht posted a 79 and 77. Freshman Heather Lott recorded an 85 and 82 in her first appearance for the Wildcats.

No. 7 Purdue leads the 17-team field with a 579 (291, 288) followed by host No. 20 Michigan St. at 582 (289, 293).

“The golf course is well suited for our team and we have our sights set on breaking 300 tomorrow,” Blackwelder said.

The Wildcats return to play the final 18 holes tomorrow at 8:45 a.m. EDT.
