FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –
Kentucky sprinters posted seven total team points in two event finals on the third day of the 2009 NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships at host University of Arkansas’ John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Ark., Friday.
In the 100m dash final, junior Rondel Sorrillo ran the third-fastest time in UK history clocking in at 10.22 to finish fifth overall and pick up four points for the Cats. The native of Trinidad and Tobago bolted down the straightaway in lane one to record his personal-best time as a Wildcat.
Earlier in the evening, the UK men’s 4x100m relay team of senior Gordon McKenzie, classmate Jose Acevedo, junior Kwasi Obeng and Sorrillo earned the first team points of the weekend for Kentucky. The Wildcats placed sixth overall with the fourth-fastest time in school history, crossing the finish in 39.27. As a result, the team picked up three team points for UK.
On the women’s side, senior Ashley Trimble finished 14th overall in the women’s heptathlon with 5,459 tallies. In the final event of the heptathlon, she placed second in the 800m run with a personal-best time of 2:11.32 to pick up 945 points. The mark is the second-fastest time run in the heptathlon 800m at nationals over the past five years.
In the second event of the day, Trimble finished 12th in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 118-8 to pick up 594 points toward her total. To open the day, the Columbus, Ohio, native hit the dirt at 17-9.75 to place 20th in the heptathlon long jump and collected 680 points.
Three Wildcats will be in action on Saturday, the final day of the Championships, with only event finals on the meet schedule.
At 11:00 a.m. ET, seniors Chase Madison and Rashaud Scott will compete in the final of the men’s discus. After three qualifying round throws, Scott stood fourth at 193-8, while Madison ranked 10th with a mark of 187-9.
Scott is defending his 2008 national title in the event. Two weeks ago at the Mideast Regional he threw a personal-best mark of 216-2 that set the UK varsity record and leads the nation. Only eight men in the world have thrown the discus further in sanctioned competitions this year. Martin Maric of California stood in first after a top qualifying throw of 201-10.
Sorrillo will run in the men’s 200m dash final at approximately 1:42 p.m. ET as part of the live CBS national broadcast. Thursday evening he won his 200m dash semifinal heat. Sorrillo crossed the finish line in 20.45, breaking his UK varsity record set two weeks ago at the Mideast Regional. His time was the second-fastest finish of the semifinals.
