LEXINGTON, Ky. – Three Kentucky track and field seniors, Ashley Muffet, Rashaud Scott and Ashley Trimble, were named Southeastern Conference Athletes of the Week, the league office in Birmingham, Ala., announced Tuesday.
The three weekly awards are the first of 2009 for the Wildcats after earning seven honors last year.
One of those honorees last season was Rashaud Scott, earning recognition in January 2008. Scott was named the SEC Male Field Athlete of the Week for the second time in his career after an impressive performance at Arizona State’s Baldy Castillo Invitational to open the outdoor season. The defending men’s discus national champion broke the nine-year-old meet record at ASU with a personal-best throw of 212-9. His discus mark tops the SEC and ranks fifth in the IAAF world rankings. Scott’s throw ranks second all-time at UK and earned him an NCAA regional-qualifying mark.
Fellow senior thrower Ashley Muffet was tabbed SEC Female Field Athlete of the Week after posting three NCAA qualifying marks to open the season at Arizona State. This is her third honor from the conference after claiming honors in February 2007 and April 2006. Muffet won the women’s hammer throw title in Tempe, posting an NCAA regional-qualifying mark of 187-11. She also notched two additional regional-qualifying marks in the shot put and discus. Muffet placed second in the shot put with a distance measuring 53-4.50 on her third throw. In the discus, she claimed fifth overall with a throw of 163-6 on her first attempt from the ring.Impressively, she leads the conference in shot put and discus and is second in the hammer behind teammate Kristin Smith.
Classmate Ashley Trimble earned the first career conference weekly honor after her season-opening performance at ASU. She was named SEC Female Runner of the Week after winning the women’s 400m hurdles in a time of 59.64 and continued her brilliant senior year by clinching a regional-qualifying mark. Trimble leads the SEC in the 400-meter hurdles by 0.27 seconds. Earlier in the day she earned another regional-qualifying mark in the 100m hurdles, clocking in at 13.85 to place third overall. Trimble’s 100m hurdle time ranks fourth in the SEC.
Kentucky will send split squads this weekend to the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas and the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala.
