CORAL GABLES, Fla. –
Playing its fourth match in six days, the No. 13 Kentucky men’s tennis team did not show any signs of slowing down notching a 5-2 road win at No. 45 Miami to win its fourth-straight in a rain-delayed match at the Hurricanes’ Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Wednesday.
UK’s (12-4, 2-2 SEC) twelfth victory matches the Wildcats’ win total from last year with eight regular-season contests remaining. Kentucky has allowed only three team points to its opposition over the past four matches.
“This is a great win for us and our best performance of the year,” UK head coach Dennis Emery said. “They (Miami) are ranked lower than usual right now because their number one and number three players have been out of the line-up, so they took some losses they normally wouldn’t take. For us to lose the doubles point and then win five of six singles matches outdoors on the road is a great win against a potential top-20 team at the end of the season.”
Miami (6-6) and Kentucky began on the doubles courts.
The Hurricane tandem of Daniel Vallverdu and David Rosenfeld upset the No. 22 UK team of senior Bruno Agostinelli and sophomore Brad Cox on court one, 8-3. Miami continued to roll on court three with an 8-4 victory by Christian Blocker and David Simon over Wildcat sophomore Alberto Gonzalez and freshman Alex Musialek. On court two, UK freshmen Graeme Dyce and Eric Quigley won a seven-point tiebreak to defeat Keith Crowley and Carl Sundberg , 8-7.
With the Hurricanes up 1-0 early, rain interrupted the outdoor match for over an hour and 20 minutes before singles play. The delay did not seem to affect the teams as all six singles matches went quickly in only two sets.
No. 111 Quigley continued his stellar play this season by recording his ninth-straight singles victory overall with a 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Simon on court three. His win tied the match at 1-1.
UK took a 2-1 lead after Cox won his fourth-straight match, dispatching Miami’s No. 117 Blocker 6-4, 6-3 on court two.
Gonzalez made good on a return to his hometown of Miami with a straight-set 6-4, 6-2 victory over Hurricane Ignacio Taboada on court six. The victory extended UK’s lead to 3-1.
Miami got back on the scoreboard on court five as No. 90 Sundberg took out Dyce 6-1, 6-4, to close the scoring gap to one point.
Musialek wrapped up the UK victory on court four, beating Rosenfeld 7-6, 6-1 for the Cats’ fourth team point. The triumph marks Musialek’s eighth-straight victory.
No. 5 Agostinelli earned his third-straight match on court one, with his 6-2, 6-4 defeat of No. 29 Vallverdu.
“That was a great win for Bruno, Vallverdu was ranked No. 3 in the preseason,” said Emery. “Cox played well today winning his fourth in a row and I thought Gonzalez played well coming back to his hometown.”
Miami’s head coach Mario Rincon was also impressed.
“Kentucky is one of the best teams in the country, and they play great first sets,” expressed Rincon, a former All-American tennis player at Kentucky. “They were taking a lot of chances, and it worked for them today.”
UK has eight days off before its next match at home against SEC rival No.24 Alabama on Fri. Mar. 27.
