KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – After two days of play, the University of Kentucky women’s golf team claims seventh place with a cumulative score of 614 (312-302) at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic at Oak Point Golf Course Monday.
“Sara Hurwitch and Mallory Blackwelder both stepped up today to overcome the cold and windy conditions and contribute solid rounds,” head coach Myra Blackwelder said. “The temperature dropped into the thirties the last hour of play, and I am really pleased that our team made a significant move up the leaderboard.”
Hurwitch, shaving seven strokes off her score, bounced back from a rough first round to lead the team in the second. She is currently tied for 25th with Mallory Blackwelder who carded a two-over-par 74.
Junior Erica Still made the biggest improvement on the team by shaving eight strokes off her score, shooting a 77.
The Wildcats shaved 10 strokes off their score, the largest improvement the team has made from the first to the second round this season. No. 45 Kentucky is two strokes away from fifth place which is currently held by No. 27 Florida with a cumulative 612 (309-303). In round two, the Wildcats outplayed the University of Miami, who currently claims first place, by three strokes.
“Tomorrow we go back to Cougar Point with overnight temperatures expected to drop to 26 degrees,” Myra Blackwelder said. “The team feels that they left a lot of shots out on the course and are determined to break 300 tomorrow.”
Tee times on Tuesday will begin shotgun style at 9:15 a.m. ET. Live scoring is available on www.golfstat.com.
