“I am so excited UK was chosen as a host site for the 2010 central regional gymnastics championships,” Kentucky Head Coach Mo Mitchell said. “It will be one of the largest and most competitive gymnastics events held in the state of Kentucky in a long time. We will be hosting five of the top teams in the country. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase a gymnastics championship for our community. It will truly be a first-class event.”
The top two teams, as well as the top two all-around competitors not on an advancing team, from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the 2010 National Collegiate Women’s Gymnastics Championships, being held April 22-24, at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
In addition, the event winners at the regional championships will advance to the national championships in that event only, if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around competition.
“We are excited to host an NCAA championship competition,” Kentucky Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart said. “Our gymnastics program continues to grow in its stature and as it does we certainly want to be a part of the NCAA championship efforts. We hope it will be an exciting event that brings a lot of quality teams and visitors to our town in 2010. Kentucky looks forward to hosting them in Memorial Coliseum.”
