LEXINGTON, Ky. — Led by All-American Tom Csenge and freshmen sensations Megan English and Ethan Settlemires, the Kentucky rifle team posted wins over Army and Memphis, on Saturday at UK’s Barker Hall.
“Overall, I was pleased with the performance of the entire team, we saw some really good things today from a lot of people,” head coach Harry Mullins said. “The team just needs to work out some small issues and I think they will reach their number goals. The hard work that they have been putting in is starting to pay off.”
Csenge, a junior and two-time first-team All-American in 2007-08, totaled a match-high 590 in air rifle and a 578 in smallbore. English posted a 589 in air rifle, while Settlemires finished with a 588 in air gun and a 574 in smallbore.
“Megan broke had a 583 in smallbore and had a 589 in air rifle,” Mullins said. “She is right there at the door to break through to the next level and with just a little more work and focus we are going to see some good things from her in the near future. I am really proud of her for her hard work and focus.”
UK totaled 4658, including a 2354 in air rifle and a 2304 in smallbore, edging Army’s 2310 in air gun and 2280 in smallbore. Memphis finished with a 4550, with a 2306 in air rifle and a 2244 in smallbore.
“Our air rifle has been in the 2350’s now for the past few matches,” Mullins detailed. “We need to get back to shooting better smallbore. I think that this will come if we stay the course and keep our focus on the plan.”
Rifle returns to action next weekend, hosting conference foe West Virginia on Nov. 15.
