AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team came back to shave seven strokes off its score – good to tie for 13th place with a two-round 623 (315-308) – in the Derby Invitational, on Saturday at the Auburn University Club at Yarbrough Farms.
“The team came back today and played a little better, but we have a lot of room to improve tomorrow,” head coach Myra Blackwelder said. “We are still focused on moving into the top-10 tomorrow and in order to accomplish this, we need to be under 300.”
No. 45 Kentucky shares 13th place with No. 32 UT Chattanooga, who occupied 17th place in round one with a 317. The Wildcats, with a cumulative score of 623, sit only five strokes out of the top-10. No. 3 Arizona State took the tournament lead today with a four-under-par 284.
Senior Mallory Blackwelder broke into the top-20 with a two-over-par 74, a four-stroke improvement from round one. The last time Blackwelder carded a 74 – an overall season low – was in the second round of the 2008 Ron Moore Intercollegiate.
Freshman Ashlee Rose still leads Kentucky with a cumulative 150, tying her for 12th place. Kristin Vincent and Alyssa Randolph carded an 81 and are tied for 72nd and 75th respectively. Erica Still made the biggest improvement for the Wildcats as she shaved nine strokes off her score – good for a 12-place improvement to tie for 75th.
