LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky wide receiver Dicky Lyons, Jr., will be out for the remainder of the season after sustaining a knee injury during the South Carolina game, Coach Rich Brooks announced Monday.
Lyons incurred a torn posterior cruciate ligament and a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee while being tackled early in the second quarter of the game. After the swelling subsides, he will undergo surgery and begin rehabilitation. He is scheduled to graduate in December with a degree in communications and leadership development.
A senior from New Orleans, La., Lyons is Kentucky’s leading receiver this season. In six games, he caught 33 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns. He ranks second in the Southeastern Conference in receptions per game.
“I feel very bad for Dicky,” Brooks said. “He has had a great career and made some great plays. He is a crowd favorite and has meant a lot to this program.”
Lyons has had a stellar career with the Wildcats. He is fifth in school history in career receptions (141), fourth in career receiving yards (1,752) and tied for third in career touchdown receptions with 18.
Lyons caught 50 passes for 822 yards and nine touchdowns during the 2006 season and followed that with 56 catches for 655 yards and seven TDs in 2007, helping lead the Wildcats to Music City Bowl championships both seasons.
Lyons’ single-game highs include 12 catches this season vs. Middle Tennessee, along with 124 receiving yards and three touchdowns in the 2007 game vs. Florida.
Lyons is the son of Dicky Lyons, Sr., who played at UK from 1966-68 and whose jersey is retired as one of the most outstanding players in school history. Lyons Sr. and Jr. are believed to be the only father-son combination in NCAA history who have each caught a touchdown pass of 80 yards or more.
Florida Game Selected by Raycom: The Kentucky at Florida game on Oct. 25 has been selected for live regional telecast by Raycom Sports. Game time will be 12:30 p.m. at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
This will be Kentucky’s fifth national or regional telecast of the year, in addition to Louisville (ESPN), Alabama (CBS), South Carolina (Raycom) and Arkansas (ESPNU).
Scouts of the Week: Cornerback Daryl Faulkner and linebacker Tatum Lewis are Kentucky’s Scout Team Players of the Week, Coach Rich Brooks has announced.
Faulkner, a sophomore from Memphis, Tenn., and Lewis, a freshman from Winchester, Ky., were selected for their effort in helping the Wildcats prepare for last Saturday’s game vs. South Carolina.
