CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Kentucky’s women’s golf team concluded the second round of the Lady Tar Heel Invitational with a cumulative score of 620 (+44), maintaining 15th place overall, on Saturday at Finley Golf Course.
“Again after getting off to a slow start in the heavy dew and cool temperatures, the team hung in there and finished strong as the day warmed up,” head coach Myra Blackwelder said. “Today’s set up featured very difficult pins tucked behind bunkers. This round was one of those that demand a lot of patience.”
After today’s round, Kentucky, ranked 67th, outplayed No. 15 Florida State and No. 4 Tulsa by 12 and 11 strokes respectively. The Wildcats’ cumulative score puts them only six strokes out of top-10 placement. Thirteen teams in the field are ranked top-50 including No. 23 Wake Forest who claimed round two.
All five Wildcats broke 80 in today’s round; four of which improved their score from yesterday’s play. Freshman Ashlee Rose led the team in birdies (4) as she shaved off seven strokes off her score in round one. Senior Mallory Blackwelder and junior Erica Still led the team in scoring, carding a 76.
“Tomorrow we will go with the same game plan and continue to be patient, choose the flags to go for and settle for the middle of the green when necessary,” Blackwelder said.
There will be a shotgun start at approximately 9:15 a.m. ET, on Sunday. Live scoring will be available on www.Golfstat.com and www.TarHeelBlue.com.
