COLUMBUS, Ohio ? University of Kentucky freshmen Colin Boevers and Danielle Sampley both posted top-five finishes at the USA Track and Field (USATF) Junior Championships held in Columbus, Ohio this weekend.
On Saturday, Boevers threw a distance of 61-8.50 on his second shot put heave to place third overall. The next day, Boevers threw the discus a distance of 185-1 on his third attempt of the Championships to place seventh overall.
Classmate Danielle Sampley finished fourth overall in the women?s heptathlon at the Championships with 4893 points. The freshman cleared a personal-best height of 5-3.75 in the heptathlon high jump on Saturday to place second in the event. Sampley won the 200 meter dash and placed second in the shot put and long jump during the seven-event, two-day competition.
Thus far five Wildcats, including UK throws assistant coach Doug Reynolds, have qualified and officially declared to compete at the United States Track and Field Olympic Trials held June 27 ? July 6 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Freshman Grant Lindsey (high jump) will join three juniors Chase Madison (discus), Rashaud Scott (discus), Ashley Muffet (shot put) and Reynolds (discus) out west. Rolling athlete declarations to determine trials competitors will continue through Wednesday or until all slots are filled.
