HOOVER, Ala. — Kentucky outfielders Sawyer Carroll and Collin Cowgill have been named to the Golden Spikes National Player of the Year Semifinal Watch List, consisting of the top 50 players in college baseball, USA Baseball announced.
Carroll and Cowgill, two of the first-team All-Southeastern Conference outfielders, have paced No. 19 Kentucky at the plate all season, with Carroll leading the SEC in average (.416) and RBI (77). Carroll has added 19 doubles, two triples and 16 home runs, stealing 11-of-11 bases. Carroll?s 77 RBI marks a school record, equaling the 77 RBI totaled in 2006 by SEC Player of the Year Ryan Strieby. Carroll, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound right-fielder, leads UK with a .510 on-base percentage and a .756 slugging mark.
Cowgill, a five-tool outfielder, leads UK with 18 home runs, adding a .364 average, with 13 doubles, two triples and 56 RBI, ranking fourth in the SEC, stealing 20-of-24 bases. Cowgill, who leads UK with seven outfield assists, has drawn a team-best 44 walks, slugging .703 and reaching bases at a .487 clip.
The two outfielders are members of the Dick Howser and Brooks Wallace National Player of the Year Watch listings.
UK is one of only eight schools in the nation to total two players on the listing, including SEC members South Carolina and Georgia.
Fourth-seeded Kentucky opens SEC play on Wednesday night with a 9 p.m. ET matchup with fifth-seeded Alabama. Fans in Lexington can catch the action live on television for the UK Wednesday and Thursday games, on Insight-Lexington channel 17.
