LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The No. 37 doubles pair of junior Carolina Escamilla and sophomore Christine Johnston were selected by the NCAA to be second alternates during the doubles championship May 21-26 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Escamilla and Johnston have been ranked as high as No. 20 in the season. They hold a 7-6 doubles record and are the leading duo on the Wildcat team at the No. 1 position.
UK has advanced a doubles team to the NCAA championship eight times since 2001. Escamilla reached the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament in 2006 with partner Kim Coventry.
Earlier this year the Wildcat pair upset three ranked teams. They beat Georgia?s No. 47 pair of Kelley Hyndman and Monika Dancevic, 8-1, and led No. 42 UGA duo of K. Hyndman and Yvette Hyndman during the SEC Championship, 6-4 before it was suspended. In a doubles sweep of Vanderbilt, Escamilla and Johnston defeated the No. 54 doubles team of Amanda Taylor and Courtney Ulery, 8-5.
The No. 23 Kentucky team will be playing the first round of the NCAA Division I Women?s Tennis Championships in Nashville, Tenn., at Vanderbilt on May 9-10 against No. 44 Boise State. For complete coverage of tournament action, visit www.ukathletics.com.
