STARKVILLE, Miss. ? Kentucky women?s tennis played in Starkville, Miss. Friday afternoon. The No. 23 Wildcats (13-5 overall, 4-3 SEC) defeated the No. 63 Bulldogs (7-8, 0-7) of Mississippi State, 5-1.
Kentucky began the day with singles due to rain. Sophomore Sarah Woestmann who is ranked 83rd nationally, earned UK?s first point of the day on court two. Woestmann defeated Renee Joseph of MSU in a quick match, 6-2, 6-2. The Wildcats also took the second point in the form of freshman Alaina Trgovich. Trgovich hammered out a 6-1, 6-2 decision against DeAndra Saddler.
The following singles points came in the form of four, three set matches. SEC Freshman of the Week Megan Broderick of Kentucky rallied with Martina Banikova on court one. The first set went to the Bulldogs, 6-3. Broderick dished out a 6-1, 6-4 verdict in the second and third sets for the third point. Sophomore Christine Johnston secured the win for Kentucky. Johnston won the first set, 6-4, but fell to Radka Feranicova of Mississippi State, 6-3 in the second round. The Wildcat sophomore bounced back in the third set, 6-3, to hand Feranicova the loss.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs posted their first point on the board on court six. MSU?s Valeriya Makarycheva defeated Whitney Spencer in the third three set match of the day. Spencer took the first set in a 7-6(9) tie breaker. Markarycheva took the next set 6-2, and rallied in the third set for a 7-5 victory.
Kentucky?s Carolina Escamilla closed out the day on court three against Elna de Villiers. The first set was a tie break round in UK?s favor, 7-6(3). De Villiers took the second bout 6-2, but Escamillla took back the match in a 7-5 third set.
