LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky softball team will travel to Louisville for a mid-week game against their in-state rival Louisville, Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The game at Ulmer Stadium will complete the two teams? home-and-home series for the 2008 campaign. Louisville topped the Wildcats in Lexington three weeks ago 6-1, on a blistery cold evening at the UK Softball Complex.
Kentucky (13-13, 1-5) has won 12 non-conference games this season and 11 of its last 17 overall. The Blue and White have tallied a seven-game winning streak and a win over a ranked opponent for the first time in two years so far this season. Head Coach Rachel Lawson earned her 100th career coaching victory and sophomore Molly Johnson strung together 10 consecutive games with a hit. Sophomore pitcher Amber Matousek became the first UK pitcher since 1999 to throw 10 or more strikeouts in a game, and the right-hander has done it on three occasions this season.
Senior Audrey Meyer?s bat has come alive as of late. The senior from Oregon has notched a hit in six of her last seven outings and she has upped her batting average to a career-high .328. Freshman Sam DeMartine and senior Ashley Dimkich both smacked their second career home runs this weekend against #2 Alabama.
Louisville (13-12, 0-0) have yet to start conference action this season and have not seen the field since Fri., March 21 as two of their games this last weekend were cancelled due to inclement weather.
Kentucky and Louisville have met 20 times on the softball field, with UK holding a 12-8 advantage. The first meeting between the two school?s was March 29, 2000, in Lexington, where the Cardinals took a 2-0 victory. UK has twice had a three-game winning streak over their state rivals in the series.
