LEXINGTON, Ky. — Riding the longest winning streak in the nation, including a 7-0 record last week, the No. 2 Kentucky baseball team has been tabbed the CollegeBaseballInsider.com National Team of the Week, announced Wednesday.
Kentucky (18-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) sports the best record in college baseball, one of only two remaining unbeatens left in the country. UK completed a 7-0 week with a 3-0 sweep of Alabama, a team that entered the series riding a six-game winning streak. The Wildcats added a three-game sweep of Purdue and a twin-bill sweep of Eastern Michigan during the week.
UK has been led by a host of experienced positional players and a deep, veteran pitching staff. UK has posted a .364 team average, ripping 56 doubles, seven triples, 26 homers, and 182 RBI, scoring 202 times. On the mound, UK has totaled the second-best team ERA in the country, a 2.08 mark, working 160 innings and posting a 164-33 strikeout-walk ratio. UK right fielder Sawyer Carroll leads the team and the SEC in nearly every category, batting for a .532 average, ripping eight doubles, a triple, seven home runs, and 32 RBI.
One win shy of tying the school mark for the best start to a season, Kentucky will square off with Xavier on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. ET at Cliff Hagan Stadium, before traveling to Auburn for the second SEC series of the year.
