LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky track and field team received news that six athletes earned Southeastern Conference Indoor Track Awards. One male and five female Cats were selected by the conference?s head coaches as All-SEC squad members, the league office in Birmingham, Ala., announced late Tuesday.
Junior Rashaud Scott received men?s second team All-SEC honors for his second-place showing in the shot put at the SEC Championships. The junior will compete this weekend in the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships at the University of Arkansas. Scott earned a conference athlete of the week award in January and owns the fourth-best shot put mark (62-6.50) all-time at Kentucky.
Junior Ashley Trimble finished second in the women?s pentathlon at the conference meet to earn the All-SEC honor. The versatile athlete earned a provisional mark for her effort. The pentathlon showcases multi-athletes in the 60m hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put and 800m run.
The Kentucky women?s distance medley team takes home the final four awards for the Cats after its second-place finish at the SEC Indoors. The team consisting of senior Lavera Morris, juniors Jenna and Jessica Ortman and freshman Bianca Tyson crossed the line behind Tennessee.
Earlier the league announced that rookie Derrick Locke was named the Southeastern Conference?s Track and Field Male Freshman Field Athlete of the Year.
The UK men?s squad are ranked 19th in the country this week, while the Wildcat women?s team slipped to 25th in the nation.
Twelve Wildcats are in Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend for competition at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
