LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky softball team will return to Chattanooga, Tenn., this weekend for the Chattanooga Frost Classic where the Wildcats will play five teams in three days.
Kentucky (5-7, 0-0) is riding a three-game win streak after taking two dominating home victories against Toledo on Sunday. The UK bats were out in full force in their season home opening doubleheader series over Toledo. The Wildcats recorded 23 hits, including nine that went for extra bases.
With the double-dip win total Kentucky brought their program home opening record to 7-5 all-time, after taking a 9-3 win in the opening game, and needing just five innings for a 15-5 decision in the nightcap.
Freshman Sam DeMartine went a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and seven RBI for the series. Sophomore Molly Johnson belted a double and a three-run home run in the same inning in the team?s 15-5, triumph over the Rockets in the second game of the day.
The Wildcats also got quality pitching out of winners Amber Matousek and Lindsay Brogdon. Brogdon picked up her first win of the season in the nightcap. Matousek appeared in her sixth contest of the season and totaled another 10 strikeout performance. The 10 strikeouts ties a career high, which she set in the opening day, win over Wichita State. She became the first UK pitcher to toss 10 strikeouts in a game since Keary Camunas threw 13 in 1999.
UK opened their 2008 campaign in Chattanooga playing Wichita State and host Chattanooga. The team opened with a 2-2 weekend, getting two victories on opening day.
This time around, Kentucky will face Wright State, Connecticut, Marshall, Eastern Illinois and Indiana in a three-day stretch. The Blue and White open with Wright State and Connecticut in back-to-back games Friday, with the games being played at Chattanooga State University. The Wildcats will return to Jim Frost Stadium with a doubleheader against Marshall and Eastern Illinois. Kentucky wraps up play in Chattanooga with a Sunday tilt against border state rival Indiana.
Kentucky holds a combined 16-13 all-time series record against this weekend?s opponents. The Wildcats and Hoosiers have met the most with UK holding a 7-6 edge. UK also holds a 6-2 advantage all-time against Marshall. The Wildcats and Connecticut Huskies have only met once in school history. Eastern Illinois and UK have also only met once in history, while Wright State holds a 4-2 edge over the Blue and White.
