LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky women?s golf team kicked off its spring ledger by competing at the Qdoba Invitational in tough weather that included downpours of rain Sunday. The Wildcats finished tied for fifth with a team score of 307 in the clubhouse at Don Shula?s Golf Resort in Miami Lakes, Fla., after one round of play.
Freshman Louise Ljungstedt led the Cats on the course with a two-over par 74, good for fifth in the individual standings. Junior Mallory Blackwelder also put together a good round with a score of 75 on the day to place her in a tie for 12th. Senior Elizabeth Dotson and sophomore Erica Still rounded out the scoring for Kentucky with scorecards reading 78 and 80, respectively.
Kentucky trails first-place No. 22 East Carolina by 11 strokes after the first of three days of competition. No. 29 Louisville and host Miami tied for second at 300, followed by No. 36 San Jose State just two scores behind in fourth. The Wildcats are knotted with Kansas in the fifth slot.
Of the 12-team field, four of the teams are ranked in the top-50 in the country by Golfweek magazine including No. 23 Virginia. Kentucky and Mississippi State are the only representatives of the Southeastern Conference in the field. Other teams competing are: Coastal Carolina, New Mexico State, South Florida and Southern Mississippi.
The tournament resumes Monday with an 8:30 a.m. ET shotgun start. Teams wrap up the tourney with another 8:30 a.m. ET shotgun start Tuesday.
