?Hopefully we learned something from our last loss,? UK Coach Matthew Mitchell said. ?We have to take better care of the basketball and our defense has to improve. We?ve had some intense practices this weekend and we?ll see how we respond against William & Mary. They are a solid team who can shoot the ball well and it will be a tough battle.?
Mahoney (Detroit) leads UK and ranks fourth in the Southeastern Conference in scoring, averaging 17.4 points per game. She has scored in double-figures in six consecutive games and recorded two games with 20 points or more. Senior center Sarah Elliott (McKee, Ky.) follows Mahoney in the scoring column with 13.3 ppg. She also pulls down a team-high 7.9 rebounds and shoots 56.8 percent from the floor, which ranks fifth in the SEC. Elliott has swatted 154 blocks in her four-year career and needs just two more to tie the school record of 156 set by Valerie Still from 1979-83. Elliott has charted at least two blocks in six of seven games, including a season-high four vs. WKU.
William & Mary, located in Williamsburg, Va., is the second-oldest college in the United States. It was founded in 1693 by King Williams III and Queen Mary II of England. The Tribe (3-3) are coming off a 63-62 win over Maine last Thursday. They also have wins over Campbell and Penn. As a team, W&M ranks second in the league, hitting an impressive 7.8 three-pointers made per game on 37.9 percent shooting.
Senior forward Kyra Kaylor leads the team in scoring (15.7 ppg) and rebounding (7.7 rpg) and needs just seven points to break the program?s career scoring record (1,511).
The Cats are 8-9 vs. members of William & Mary?s Colonial Athletic Association. This is the first meeting between Kentucky and William & Mary. UK will meet another CAA member in Old Dominion on Dec. 28.
