LEXINGTON, Ky. — Sophomore shooter Tom Csenge posted the highest total score recorded in the NCAA so far this year, to lead the Kentucky rifle team to a 4658-4527 victory over the visiting Ole Miss Rebels, on Friday afternoon at Barker Hall.

Csenge totaled a 593 air rifle score and a 588 smallbore score for a combine 1181 total. Csenge, an All-America selection a year ago as a freshman, became the first NCAA shooter to break 1180 so far this season.

?Overall, I felt that it was a good day of work for the team and everybody gave it their best effort today,? Kentucky head coach Harry Mullins said. ?We need to get back to work and focus on preparing for N.C. State and Morehead State on Sunday.?

Kentucky (4-0, 2-0 Great American Rifle Conference) opened up strong behind Csenge, along with several other shooters on the team, including freshman southpaw Sarah Broeker totaling a personal-best 587 air rifle score. Ashley Jackson totaled a 585 air rifle score and Jen Pason, the 2006-07 GARC Rookie of the Year, tallied a 585 total air rifle score. Freshman Clint Sejkora shot a 584 in air rifle and junior Andrew Roland notched a 583 air rifle score. Senior co-captain Ray Geyer added to UK?s strong air rifle total with a 581, and sophomore Leslie Angeli totaled a 578 in air gun. Senior Jake Savitts rounded out the entire UK lineup to break 570 in air rifle, with a 573.

?Tom had a very strong day, he has really turned into one of the top shooter in the nation,? Mullins said. ?He shot a 588 in smallbore and a 593 in air rifle, both the highest scores shot in the nation so far this year. His 1181 was the highest combined score shot so far this season. Sarah [Broeker] had a personal high in air rifle with a 587 and Clint [Sejkora] also added a personal best. Logan Fox also had a good score with a 578 in air gun.?

Kentucky outshot the Rebels in smallbore 2314-2231 and in air rifle 2344-2296. Pason followed Csenge with the second highest smallbore score, a 578.

?We shot a little better air rifle then we did at Nebraska but our smallbore total went down a little. We will look at our scores and get back to the grindstone at improving our overall performance. This team has a strong drive and work ethic, so they will get right back to work at boosting our smallbore score.?

Kentucky welcomes N.C. State and Morehead State for a tri-match on Sunday.
