LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Kentucky women?s basketball showcased its 2007-08 team on Thursday in front of more than 250 fans at the team?s inaugural Fan Day in Memorial Coliseum.
The Wildcats opened the evening with fun family games, music and poster giveaways before hosting a Blue-White Scrimmage. The Wildcats played three 10-minute periods and one five-minute period. Prior to the scrimmage, head coach Matthew Mitchell introduced each player in comedic style. He also asked each player personal questions to help the crowd get better acquainted with each member of the 15-person squad.
?Fan Day was fantastic,? Mitchell said. ?We had such a great turnout and we appreciate our fan support so much. It was good to get out here and play in a game situation. It was obvious that we haven?t been in situations like this and we have a lot of work to do. But I was pleased with our defensive effort and our energy, and am excited to get back to work in practice.?
The first 10-minute stanza featured an intrasquad scrimmage between the members of Kentucky?s team. The Blue squad, led by junior point guard Carly Ormerod?s (Louisville, Ky.) six points and senior center Sarah Elliott?s (McKee, Ky.) four rebounds defeated the White team 17-15. Senior guard Samantha Mahoney (Detroit) had seven points to lead the White squad.
The Wildcats then faced off with the team?s male practice players for the next three periods. In the first two segments against the men, Kentucky defeated the practice players 35-32 before the two teams tied 8-8 in the final five-minute period. Against the practice players, senior Chelsea Chowning (Berea, Ky.) went 4-for-4 from the floor for 10 points, while sophomore Brittany Edelen (Springfield, Ky.) followed with six. Elliott had a team-high six rebounds.
The Wildcats concluded the event with a post-game autograph session.
