LEXINGTON, Ky. ?University of Kentucky men?s tennis senior Will Ward advanced to the quarterfinals of the Wilson/ITA Southeast Indoor Regional. Ward did not make it easy on himself, winning two three-set matches at the tournament held in Lexington Saturday.
In the round of 32, the 18th seeded Ward (No. 90) lost the first set at love to Tennessee?s Boris Conkic. Ward bounced back in the second set, winning 6-3 setting up the deciding set. In the final stanza, the SEC foes battled to 6-6 forcing a third-set tiebreak. After a back-and-forth battle, Ward pulled out the victory at 13 points in the breaker, moving the senior on to the quarterfinals.
In the round of 16 Ward faced 25th-seed Bram ten Berge of Mississippi. After winning the first set 6-2, Ward fell in a second set tiebreak 7-6 at four points. The pair dueled to five games all in the final set before Ward broke ten Berge and went on to win 7-5.
The UK doubles teams both won matches to advance to the round of 16 on Sunday. The fifth-seeded duo of Ward and Marcus Sundh defeated LSU?s team of Carlsson and Gauthier 8-3. In the other half of the draw, the Wildcat tandem of Bruno Agostinelli and Brad Cox dispatched Nkoueleue and Malet of Georgia Southern 8-5.
Earlier in the day in round of 16 singles play, ninth-seeded Agostinelli (No.44) fell in three sets to the fourth seed Daniel Vallverdu of Miami 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. Sundh also came up short to a higher seed, losing 6-4, 6-4 to Matthias Wellerman of Mississippi.
Singles quarterfinals and doubles play in the round of 16 and quarterfinals will be on the UK courts at the Boone Tennis Center Sunday. The singles semifinals and final as well as the doubles final are set for Monday at Boone.
