NASHVILLE – Kentucky doubles players went undefeated on Friday as the Wildcats capped off a successful first day of the June Stewart Invitational at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center.
Megan Broderick (Tampa, Fla.) and Lauren Meier (Woodstock, Ga.) picked up a pair of wins, defeating Tennessee-Martin’s Elizma Schoonees and Ernestine Koornhof, 8-1 before topping Vanderbilt’s Liberty Sveke and Keilly Ullery, 9-8 (7-3). The duo will face Wildcat teammates Carolina Escamilla (Medellin, Columbia) and Christine Johnston (Columbus, Ohio) in the finals of the bracket on Saturday. Escamilla and Johnston beat Indiana’s Alba Berdala and Lindsey Stuckey 8-3 before beating Vandy’s Amanda Taylor and Courtney Ullery, 8-6.
In a separate doubles bracket, Alaina Trgovich (Munster, Ind.) and Jessica Guiggioli (Turin, Italy) defeated Tennessee-Martin’s Martie Wahl and Mary Beth Gunn, 8-2.
The Wildcats won four of their six singles matches on the day. Broderick made quick work of Berdala, 6-2, 6-0, and Johnson had no trouble with Koornhof, 6-0, 6-0. Meier defeated Arizona State’s Jessica Leitch, 6-2, 6-2 and Trgovich beat Indiana’s Myriam Sopel, 6-3, 6-3. Escamilla fell to Vanderbilt’s Keilly Ullery in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 1-6, after winning the opening frame. Giuggioli fell to Arizona State’s Wendy Pilecka, 1-6, 0-6.
