LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Three wins over the weekend propelled University of Kentucky men?s tennis freshman Brad Cox into the qualifying tournament at the All-American Championships held this week in Tulsa, Okla.
Cox won three straight matches in the pre-qualifying tournament to earn one of 16 spots into the 128-player qualifying tournament ending on Wednesday. The freshman joins Kentucky seniors Will Ward (No. 90) and Marcus Sundh playing in the singles qualifying tournament draw. Ward and Sundh begin play in the doubles qualifying tournament Tuesday evening.
Saturday afternoon Cox matched-up against SEC-foe Martel Campbell from LSU. Cox topped Campbell in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 on day one of the pre-qualifying tournament.
On day two, Cox took the court twice. Cox opened Sunday by beating Dmitry Minkin of Texas-Arlington 6-4, 7-5 setting up a match with the 33rd seed Trenton Hagan of Marquette. The match-up with Hagan determined who advanced to the qualifying tournament. Cox dispatched the seeded Hagan in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
The qualifier feeds into the 64-player, 32-doubles team main draws. Junior Bruno Agostinelli (No. 44) will compete in the main draw October 4-7. Agostinelli started his season impressively last week at the Southern Intercollegiates advancing to the round of 16.
UK will host two tournaments at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex this month during its fall slate. The Fluitt Invitational takes place Oct. 13-15, followed the next week by the ITA Southeast Indoors Oct. 19-22.
