LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky men?s tennis team earned victories over two ranked opponents during action on Saturday at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga., hosted by the University of Georgia.
UK senior Will Ward (No. 90) upset thirteenth-seeded Jean Yves Aubone (No. 70) of Florida State 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 32. Sixth-seeded UK junior Bruno Agostinelli (No. 44) needed three sets to dispatch Albert Larregola (No. 100) of Virginia Tech 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the round of 16 with Ward.
If the Wildcat teammates both won their late matches Saturday, they would square off against each other in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, neither Cat advanced to the next round. Ward fell to Wake Forest?s Steve Forman 6-4, 6-3, while Agostinelli withdrew from the tournament, advancing his opponent Christian Vitulli of Georgia to the quarters.
Kentucky freshman Brad Cox won his first-round consolation match over SEC foe Matt Brewer of Tennessee 3-6, 6-3, 10-7. Cox faces 15th seed Marc Rocafort (No. 76) of Middle Tennessee State in the next round, as the tournament continues Sunday, with finals of each flight played on Monday.
The UK doubles tandem of Cox and Ward, seeded eighth, were upset 9-8 by Middle Tennessee State?s Novak and Peers in first round action.
On the second day of action from of the H.E.B. Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas, Kentucky sophomore Jorge Jorge fell to Texas Tech?s Michael Breler in round two of the consolation bracket 6-4, 6-2.
