TOLEDO, Ohio ? The Kentucky men?s golf team opened its season today, Sept. 10, at the Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio. Through the first two rounds of play, the Wildcats are 10th overall with a team score of 592 (304-288). The 20th-ranked Florida State Seminoles lead the 16-team field with a total score of 568 (287-281).
Michigan State is currently second with a score of 571 (282-289), followed by No. 23 Louisville who is third with a total of 578 (290-388). Texas A&M, who is ranked 12th in the country, is tied with Indiana for fourth after both carded two-round totals of 579.
The Wildcats were led by junior Andy Winings who tied his career-low with a second-round 67 today. Winings is tied for ninth overall with a one-over par score of 143 (76-67) and carded nine birdies on the day, including six in the second round alone. Winings last round of 67 came on Feb. 10-11, 2006, in the second round of the Gator Invitational where he eventually finished tied for 15th.
Senior Cale Barr is also among the top 25 after posting a two-round total of 147 (73-74). Barr racked up seven birdies on the day with three in the first round and four in the second. The Versailles native currently stands at five over par and tied for 24th in the individual standings.
Freshman James Kania and sophomore Derek Oldham are both playing in their first tournament for the Wildcats and are tied for 49th after two rounds of play. Kania had five birdies on day one and is at plus-nine with a score of 151 (78-73). Oldham recorded a 77 in the first round, followed by a second-round score of 74 to stand tied with Kania. Junior Jordan Blann rounds out the scoring for Kentucky with a two-round total of 152 (78-74) and is tied for 59th overall.
The tournament wraps up on Tuesday with the final 18 holes. Play is set to begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
