LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky football team will have its second major preseason scrimmage on Saturday, and it will be an important workout in terms of decision-making, Coach Rich Brooks said following Friday’s practice at the Nutter Training Center.
“I’m looking to see who’s gotten better since the last scrimmage and who’s ready to take a few steps forward,” Brooks said. “We need to get a good look at (players) and need to start sorting some things out.”
Asked if the time had come to start making depth-chart decisions, Brooks said, “At some positions we have to. The quarterback position has to get narrowed down. We have to get a second (quarterback) ready and try to make that decision after this or the first part of the week at the very latest. We have another scrimmage on Tuesday.”
Brooks indicated that redshirt freshman Mike Hartline was still ahead of the other contenders for the backup quarterback role, but “it’s not a very firm grip” on the spot.
The Wildcats have practiced in helmets, jerseys, and shorts the last two days in order to help the players alleviate the heat and be ready for the scrimmage. The Wildcats are just two weeks away from the season opener vs. Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 1.
