COLUMBIA, S.C. ? The Kentucky softball team fell by a final of 2-0 today, Apr. 22, at South Carolina to see its record move to 19-24 overall and 4-18 in the Southeastern Conference. With the three-game sweep, the Gamecocks are now 32-16 and even their league record at 10-10.
The Gamecocks started the scoring in the bottom of the second. A leadoff triple followed by a two-out single up the middle gave USC the early 1-0 lead.
For the second straight day, USC starting pitcher Melissa Hendon held the Wildcat bats silent through the first three innings. Freshman Natalie Smith erased the no-hitter with a single to the right side to open the fourth inning. She went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Audrey Meyer and advanced to third on a single to shallow left field by Brooke Marnitz. A two-out walk to Molly Johnson loaded the bases, but the Wildcats were not able to push a run across and continued to trail by a run.
South Carolina added another run in the home half of the fourth inning. A pair of singles and two straight walks made it a 2-0 USC advantage. UK starter Lindsay Brogdon then got a ground ball to second base to end the inning and strand three Gamecock baserunners.
The Cats had just two baserunners over the final three innings to fall by the 2-0 final.
UK had three hits on the day, all singles, by Smith, Marnitz and Alli Eckman.
Brogdon falls to 0-3 after allowing two earned runs on eight hits in a complete-game six innings. The junior walked three USC batters.
Hendon earned the shutout win and allowed just three hits in the complete game. Hendon struck out three and walked one in the win.
The Wildcats return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 25, when they host a non-conference doubleheader against Indiana. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at the UK Softball Complex.
