WILHEMSHAVEN, Germany ? Former Kentucky soccer star Riley O?Neill netted his first professional goal this past week, burying the game-winner to lead his side, SV Wilhemshaven, to win over Osnabrueck.
In his first start, O?Neill was named the man of the match as his goal was the lone shot to find net in the SV Wilhelmshaven upset over the league?s top-ranked team. His goal came in the ninth-minute on a header off a Steffen Bury corner. Later in the first half, he just missed a second goal, sending a header over the crossbar from six yards out in the 33rd minute.
O?Neill joined the German club in January after closing out a stellar career with the Wildcats that saw him wind up in the top five in school history in goals, assists, points, game-winning goals and shots.
O?Neill?s 17 goals and seven game winners in 2007 each set school records as he led UK to a 14-5-2 overall record and second-place finish in Conference USA. He was named first-team All-C-USA.
SV Wilhelmshaven competes in the Regionalliga, the third division of German soccer leagues after earning promotion last season.
