AUBURN, Ala. – The Kentucky track and field squads captured three events Saturday and the Wildcats notched several personal-bests and NCAA regional-qualifying marks to conclude the Auburn Tiger Track Classic in chilly conditions and strong wind at the Hutsell-Rosen Track.
Junior Jonathan Thomas (Frankfort, Ky.) captured the men?s 5,000 meter run with a Kentucky-best time of 14:43.94, while sophomore Jose Acevedo (Caracas, Venezuela) claimed the men?s 200 meter dash. Junior Andre? Silva (Centereach, N.Y.) won the men?s 3,000 meter steeplechase with a Hutsell-Rosen Track record of 9:16.89, just short of the all-time Kentucky top 10 in that event.
Junior middle distance runner Lavera Morris (Orlando, Fla.) had a strong showing in both the 800 and 1,500 meter runs. Morris finished second in the 800 meter with a regional-qualifying time of 2:07.41, the eighth-best mark in school history. She also was third in the 1,500 meter, finishing in 4:28.53.
Sophomore sprinter Gordon McKenzie (Queens, N.Y.), who participated in the IAAF World Junior Championships this past summer as a member of the U.S. Junior National Team, was second in the men?s 100 meter dash with a mark of 10.52.
Freshman sprinter Jenna Martin (Nova Scotia, Canada) continued to impress, finishing second in the women?s 400 meter run with a regional-qualifying time of 53.90, her collegiate-best mark and the fourth-fastest time in school history in that event.
Kentucky returns to action Thursday when it travels to Knoxville, Tenn., to participate in the three-day Sea Ray Relays. Complete results and a recap of next weekend?s action will be available at ukathletics.com.
