LEXINGTON ? The Kentucky women?s gymnastics team hits the mat Friday when it competed in a quad meet hosted by No. 14 Arizona and also features No. 16 Penn State and Texas Women?s University.
The Wildcats are coming off a season-high 196.200 in a quad-meet win over TWU, Bowling Green and Southeast Missouri this past weekend. The score was the third highest in school history and marked the first time this season UK cracked the coveted 196 plateau.
Youth has defined the Wildcats season as freshmen have filled at least half of the team?s lineup spots in every meet this season. Last week, it paid off as freshman Emilie Rymer came through with an incredible meet, winning the all-around competition with a 39.400. She also took her second straight vault title at the meet with a career best 9.925. She?s hit 9.9 or better in two straight meets and, along with defending NCAA Central Region vault champion Krystle Cook, have paced UK?s 20th-ranked vault lineup.
Cook scored an impressive 39.175 last time out in the all-around, including a title-winning 9.95 on bars. With her and fellow senior Lucy Burgin setting the tone, Kentucky?s bars line up is ranked 23rd in the country.
On the floor, it?s been another freshman setting the tone on floor as Hillary Ferguson is ranked in the top 25 nationally on the event. Her 9.925 last week won the meet crown and set a career high. She?s tallied 9.85 or better in five straight meets to lead UK?s 22nd-ranked floor unit.
Sophomore Heather Hite anchor?s UK?s No. 24 beam lineup, notching a career best 9.95 a week ago.
Arizona is coming off a quad-meet victory of its own, besting N.C. State, James Madison and William & Mary in Raleigh, N.C., with a 196.150. Penn State fell to LSU a week ago despite scoring 196.250. Texas Women?s finished second to the Wildcats in a home quad meet this past Saturday, scoring 194.800.
