LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Five Kentucky track and field athletes earned Indoor All-America honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, it was announced Tuesday.
Sophomore thrower Ashley Muffet (North Canton, Ohio) earned honors after finishing ninth in the women?s shot put at the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships. In addition, Muffet captured the 2007 SEC shot put title with a school-record toss of 56-8.50. Her mark stands as the best in the league in that event this season and is the SEC?s only automatic qualifier in the women?s shot put. Muffet holds the Kentucky school record in both the indoor and outdoor shot puts. She was the Cats? top points scorer at the SEC Championships with 13 points after also finishing sixth in the 20-pound weight throw.
Sophomore Jose Acevedo (Caracas, Venezuela), junior Nathan Browning (Petersburg, Ill.), junior Justin Harrison (Wheaton, Ill.) and senior Luis Luna (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) each earned All-America honors as part of the men?s 4×400 relay squad that finished second in the nation at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The Wildcats finished second to NCAA Champion Baylor with a time of 3:06.34. The relay team also captured the 2007 SEC Championship with a school-record, Nutter Field House-record and SEC Championship meet record time of 3:05.87. It broke the school record set in 1996.
The top eight finishers in each event at last weekend?s NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships are accorded All-America status. In the individual (non-relay) events, if one or more of the top eight finishers is of another nationality, eight U.S.-born collegians are selected in addition to any foreign-born All-Americans.
For each of the five athletes, the All-America honors are the first of their careers.
