The Kentucky men?s golf team wrapped up play today at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship in Las Vegas with a 15th-place finish. Freshman Alex Volpenhein was second in the individual standings for the best finish of his career after carding the lowest score of the day with a three-under par 69 to bring his three-day total to 214 (70-75-69). UCLA?s Lucas Lee won medalist honors with a total score of 213 (69-72-72).
Volpenhein?s previous best finish came in his collegiate debut when he placed seventh at the Topy Cup in Tanagura, Japan. The rookie recorded five birdies on the day, including three on the front nine, to tie UCLA?s Erik Flores for the low round of the afternoon. Volpenhein was one stroke shy of tying his career low.
?Alex played his heart out and nearly won one of the best events in all of college golf,? said head coach Brian Craig. ?He can flat play this game and has the guts to be a dominant player in the college and amateur arena. Hopefully, this will just be the start of great things to come for Alex.?
UCLA took home the team title with a score of 874 (282-305-287), followed by Georgia who was three strokes back at 877 (285-299-293). Arizona finished third at 885 (293-299-293), while UNLV and Minnesota round out the top five at 886 and 888, respectively.
Junior Brad Doster fired a third-round 79 to finish tied for 63rd in the individual standings, bringing his total to 233 (77-77-79). Junior Cale Barr finished 69th after shooting an 80 to give him a score of 234 (74-80-80). Sophomore Andy Winings finished at 237 and tied for 74th after carding an 85 in the third and final round, while senior Andrew Stephens was 79th with a score of 248 (81-83-84).
?The good news is we still have time to improve this team and have a solid spring season,? said Craig. ?The bad news is this finish indicates that we have a long way to go to be a legitimate contender in the post-season. We will get back to work and try to find the best starting five to lead this team as we head forward.?
The Wildcats return to action next weekend, Mar. 17-18, when they travel to Statesboro, Ga., for the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational.
