LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky slugger Sean Coughlin has been named to the College Baseball Foundation National Player of the Week Honor Roll, the organization announced Tuesday morning.
Coughlin had a monster week, while UK rolled through a 5-0 week, en route to Southeastern Conference Player of the Week honors. The backstop went 9-for-18 at the plate, driving in 12 runs and ripping six extra-base hits, while leading UK to the second-best start in school history, 12-0.
Coughlin?s SEC honor was the second conference honor bestowed upon a Wildcat this season, as Freshman Jason Kipnis tallied SEC Freshman of the Week honors while powering UK to a season-opening sweep of Furman in mid-February. During the 2006 SEC Championship season, five Wildcats reeled in SEC Player of the Week honors, the most in league history.
The College Baseball Foundation releases the listing of the top individual performances in the nation on a weekly basis. In addition to its weekly honor roll, the CBF names the annual Brooks Wallace Award, annually given to the top collegiate player in the country, at the conclusion on each season. During the preseason, Coughlin was named to the Brooks Wallace Award watch list.
Kentucky Climbs to No. 17 in NCBWA Top-30; Enters USA Today/ESPN Coaches Top-25
The Kentucky baseball team, off to the second-best start in the 103-year history of the Wildcat program, climbed as high as No. 17 in the weekly national polls released Monday night.
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, who last week was the only polling service to rank the Wildcats, bumped UK from No. 21 to No. 17.
Kentucky (12-0) also entered the Collegiate Baseball Top-30, registering at the No. 18 spot. The Wildcats also broke into the first regular season USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, notching the No. 20 post.
Kentucky has now been ranked in one of the major four polling services (NCBWA, Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, USA Today/ESPN) for 17 consecutive polls, dating back to March 20, 2006.
Coaches Clinic Set For Saturday, March 10
The 2007 Kentucky Baseball Youth Coaches Clinic has been scheduled for Saturday, March 10 from 8:30 until 10:30 a.m. at the Nutter Field House on the campus of the University of Kentucky. Join 2006 National Coach of the Year John Cohen and the Wildcat coaching staff for a morning of baseball skills, drills, and motivational techniques. The Field House is located directly next to Commonwealth Stadium on the University of Kentucky campus.
Following the coaches clinic, the Wildcats take on Tennessee Martin at 1:00 pm. All coaches who attend the clinic will receive a voucher for free admission to the game for themselves and a guest.
