LEXINGTON ? The Kentucky women?s tennis team completed a sweep of the state of Alabama on Sunday by downing the University of Alabama, 4-3, to win its third straight match.
The Wildcats got their customary point from Joelle Schwenk as the senior scored her 13th win in her last 14 outings. She battled through a tough first set before a dominating second en route to a 7-5, 6-0 victory.
Schwenk?s win made it 3-1 after UK took the doubles point and got an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Paulina Bigos at No. 5 from Whitney Spencer
Kim Coventry scored an easy 6-4, 6-1 victory over Mari Muller to clinch the match for Kentucky. The win improved UK to 9-1 on the year, including a 2-0 start in Southeastern Conference action.
Auburn got points in singles on courts three and four by knocking off Carolina Escamilla and Sarah Woestmann. The loss for Woestmann was the first of her collegiate career.
In doubles, Coventry and Schewnk ? ranked second nationally ? beat Muller and Andrea Brenes, -8-5. Escamilla and Woestmann had earlier beaten Bigos and Nicole Briceno, 8-2, on court two.
Kentucky returns to action on next weekend when it hosts LSU on Friday and Arkansas on Sunday.
