NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Derrick Byars grabbed a rebound off his own missed foul shot and scored to give No. 17 Vanderbilt its first lead with 25.5 seconds left and the Commodores held off Kentucky for a 67-65 victory Sunday.

With the victory, the Commodores moved into sole possession of second place and hold the tiebreaker over the Wildcats for the Eastern Division’s No. 2 seed for the SEC Tournament by virtue of a season sweep.

Byars finished with 26 points, and Shan Foster added 20 as the Commodores (19-9, 9-5 Southeastern Conference) erased a 10-point second-half deficit. They didn’t lead until Byars went to the free throw line.

The Commodores came up with a loose ball, and Kentucky (19-9, 8-6) fouled Foster, who missed the first free throw and nailed the second.

The Wildcats called timeout and got the ball to point guard Ramel Bradley, closely guarded by Byars.

Bradley drove the lane, was triple-teamed and threw up a shot that missed. Time expired in the scramble for the ball.

Kentucky’s Bobby Perry scored 18 points, and Jodie Meeks added 15 as the Wildcats outshot Vanderbilt 58 percent (25-of-43) to 41 percent (24-of-58). But the Commodores scored 20 points off Kentucky’s 22 turnovers.

The Commodores battled back to tie the game three times, but couldn’t get over the hump.

Kentucky surged back ahead by as many as five at 6:30 on Lukasz Obrzut’s three-point play at the 6:30 mark. But a Byars’ 3 and a follow of an Alex Gordon miss tied the score at 59.

Kentucky took the lead back at 3:32 when Bradley hit a 3, was fouled and hit the free throw. But Vandy wouldn’t go away, giving Byars a chance to pull out the victory.

Perry scored 11 first half points, in leading the Wildcats to a 32-23 lead at the break. Kentucky hit 57 percent of its shots in the half, including an unlikely 3-of-4 performance from Obrzut on an 1.9 average.
