LEXINGTON ? Senior Joelle Schwenk knocked off the 57th-ranked singles player in the nation and teamed with Kim Coventry to take down the No. 22 doubles team as Kentucky beat 32nd-ranked South Florida, 5-2, on Friday evening at the Boone Tennis Center.
Kentucky, ranked 30th nationally, improved to 9-1 on the year with its second straight win and fourth this year over a ranked opponent. The 10-game start matches the 2002 season for the best in the past 20 years. South Florida had its three-match win streak snapped and dropped to 3-2 this season.
?I am proud of the team?s collective effort,? Kentucky head coach Carlos Drada said. ?We were highly efficient throughout the match. We showed the kind of intensity that will help us continue to improve during the season.?
Coventry and Schwenk, the nation?s second-ranked doubles tandem, set the tone early with an 8-2 pasting of Shashida Robinson and Gabriela Duch on court one. The pair has now beaten six teams currently ranked in the top 32 in the country.
The Wildcats clinched the doubles point later when Carolina Escamilla and Sarah Woestmann downed Courtney Vernon and Jessica Sweeting, 9-7, at No. 2.
Schwenk quickly made it 2-0 with a dominating performance at her No. 2 singles spot. She took down Vernon, 6-3, 6-1, for her fourth victory over a ranked opponent this season. After Robinson beat Coventry on court one, each team picked up a point with a three-set win.
Woestmann ran her win streak to nine with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory at No. 4 over Liz Cruz while Escamilla dropped a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 decision on court three to Sweeting.
With the score 3-2, Whitney Spencer clinched the victory at No. 5 with a straight-set win over the All-American Duch. Giuggioli put the finishing touches on the rout with a straight-set victory of her own.
Kentucky returns to action on Friday at 4 p.m. when it opens Southeastern Conference play at Auburn.
