LEXINGTON, Ky.?The University of Kentucky women?s swimming team began the evening with a bronze medal in the 200-medley relay event. The time of 1:39.43 is easily the best time of the season, and qualifies Kentucky for its first relay ?A? NCAA standard in 2007.
UK?s quartet of freshman Chatham Penrod, and juniors Lindsay Myhre, Heather Bradford and Jenny Bradford finished behind Auburn and Georgia. Heather and Jenny Bradford?s splits topped the field in the butterfly and freestyle heats. Auburn?s first place time was 1:38.97.
In the 800-free relay, Kentucky clocked in a time of 7:29.01 good for seventh place. The team was comprised of junior Lauren Willis, sophomore Kristina Sledge, freshman Casey Miller and sophomore Haleigh Kerns. The Lady Wildcats finished the night in second place, trailing Auburn by five points, 164-159.
The men?s two relay teams were both disqualified for early jumps, leaving them in eighth place at the end of day one of the swimming portion of the Championships. Auburn has a commanding lead, scoring 251 points after five events.
Action resumes at the Lancaster Aquatic Center tomorrow at 10 a.m. EST. The men and women will begin with preliminary races in the 500-free, 200-individual medley, 50-free and 200-free relay. Finals heats begin at 6 p.m. EST.
Less than 100 tickets are available for the four day swimming sessions. Deck and bleacher tickets will be available for each day and will cost $20 for two sessions (one day of competition). Wed., Feb 7, preliminary heats will begin at noon with finals set to begin at 6 that night. Thursday-Saturday preliminary events begin at 10 a.m., with the finals taking place at 6.
