LEXINGTON ? Julie Dwyer scored an school record 39.625 in the all around and won four titles to lead No. 16 Auburn to a 196.475-193.800 victory over 25th-ranked Kentucky on Friday night at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.
The Wildcats improved their score from last weeks season opening meet by nearly a quarter point, but it wasn?t enough to top the Tigers, which had four gymnasts combine to set 10 career highs on the evening.
?We didn?t have our best meet,? Kentucky coach Mo Mitchell said. ?For us to be off and still perform as well as we did, scoring better than last week is a big thing. We know we have tons of room to improve over the next few weeks.?
Kentucky started freshmen in 11 of 24 lineup spots and got great results from Hillary Ferguson and Emily Green, who combined to post a 9.7 or better on five of their six events. Ferguson had UK?s top score on floor with a 9.85 to finish third in the meet. Green notched a 9.825 on beam, her highest score of the evening.
?The freshmen pulled through big time tonight,? Mitchell said. ?I?ve worked with Hillary for a long time and I know what she?s capable of. Emily has stepped up and become quite a competitor. We need some of the other girls to step up now as well.?
Fellow freshman Emily Rymer tallied the Wildcats top individual score of the evening with a 9.875 on vault, placing second to Dwyer in the event. Senior Krystle Cook, the defending NCAA Central Region vault champion, registered a 9.825 on the event as UK finished with a 48.925, its highest apparatus score of the evening.
Auburn was solid all meet long, scoring better than 49 on all four events en route to its ninth-highest score in school history.
Kentucky returns to action on Friday night at Memorial Coliseum for a quad meet against North Carolina, West Virginia and Maryland.
