LEXINGTON, Ky.?Senior Joey Brown was named the Southeastern Conference Female Diver of the Week for the period Jan. 8-15, as announced today by the league offices.
Brown enjoyed a stellar meet in the Wildcats? defeat of SEC-foe Alabama on Saturday, Jan. 13, Kentucky?s lone meet of the week. The Laguna Nigel, Calif., native set a Kentucky record, a Lancaster Aquatic Center record and a personal-best score on the one-meter board with a 328.51 mark on her way to winning both diving events.
?She has come so far since her freshman year,? said Coach Mike Lyden. ?I couldn?t be prouder of this honor for her; she really had a fantastic meet. The sky is the limit for her if she continues to get up and down and get in the water clean.?
The senior also won the three-meter event, scoring 312.76, four points shy of another career-high. Brown led the Wildcat divers, as the trio swept both events going 1-2-3.
This is the second time in Brown?s career that she has been tabbed SEC Diver of the Week. She first achieved the award in her sophomore season on Feb. 9, 2005.
Earlier this season, she set a career-high on the three-meter board with a 316.65 clip good for the No. 3 spot in school annals. Her sweep of both events on Saturday was the second time this season she has achieved the feat, with the other coming against Georgia.
Lyden added, ?She is really pushing her teammates, and all of her hard work is starting to pay off. It couldn?t come at a better time in the season.?
Kentucky will wrap up dual meet competition with a home meet on Sat., Jan. 20 against intrastate rival Louisville. Four seniors, including Brown, will be honored prior to the start of the meet. UK will then travel to Cincinnati for the season-finale on the 26th, before hosting the SEC Championships in February.
