Kentucky, one of the nation’s and Southeastern Conference’s top defensive teams, takes on one of the top offensive squads in the country when the Wildcats play host to Ole Miss in Memorial Coliseum Sunday, Jan. 14. Game time is 2 p.m. EST and will be broadcast live on the Big Blue Sports Network (radio) with Neil Price.
Single-game general admission tickets are available for $5 adults/$2 senior citizens and children 6-18. Ages five and under are admitted free. UK students, faculty and staff also are admitted free with valid identification based on availability. During halftime, a special ceremony will honor 571 fallen soldiers from Kentucky. Since its completion in 1950, Memorial Coliseum has borne the names of thousands of Kentucky’s war dead. But the lists of names – framed and hung on the walls of the ramps along two sides of the coliseum – have not been updated since the end of the Vietnam War. Their names will join those of their predecessors during the ceremony.
UK (13-4, 2-0 SEC) extended its regular season conference winning streak to three, dating back to last season, with an exciting one-point win at Alabama on Thursday. Samantha Mahoney hit a jumper with 1.8 seconds to lift the Cats over the pesky Tide team, 63-62.
The Wildcats rank 12th in the nation and second in the SEC in both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense, holding their opponents to just 54 points per game and 35.3 percent shooting from the floor.
The Rebels (14-4, 3-0 SEC), who are riding a five-game winning streak after upsetting No. 5/6 LSU on Thursday, are No. 3 in the nation and first in the SEC in scoring offense, averaging 81.8 points per game. They also top the league in rebounding offense, grabbing 46.6 rpg.
Three Wildcats lead a balanced scoring attack led by junior center Sarah Elliott’s 13.8 points per game. Mahoney and senior guard Jenny Pfeiffer follow with 13.4 and 10.3 ppg, respectively. Senior forward Jennifer Humphrey, who has brought down double-figure rebounds in five of the last six games, leads the Cats and ranks third in the SEC with 9.8 rebounds per game. With 780 career rebounds, she needs just five more to move up to No. 3 on UK’s all-time rebounding list. Elliott is second all-time in career blocks list with 110.
The Rebels are riding a three-game winning streak after impressive wins over nationally-ranked Vanderbilt and LSU last week. They are 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 1991-92 season when they went a perfect 11-0. Senior Armintie Price leads two Rebels in double-figure scoring with 19.4 points per game. That mark ranks second in the SEC and 25th in the NCAA. Freshman guard Alliesha Easley drops in 11.4 while sophomore center Shawn Goff follows close behind with 9.7 points per game.
This is the 27th meeting in the all-time series. The Rebels lead 18-8, including an 8-4 advantage when playing in Lexington. However, UK has won three straight against Ole Miss.
